What is the purpose of a Wide Angle lens?

I am a photographer from the school and found a camera with a lens extra wide angle. What is its exact purpose? As .. the only difference between it and a Standard Lens?

Imagine that you are near a wall and wants to take a picture of a lot of it. Then you must use a wide range of angle for maximum wall in the room.
