Digital Camera Lens – A question of time
Perhaps one of the most confusing in the world of Digital Cameras is the lens length. Heard expressions like "TV", "Angle", "visual field", "5 times" and many others describe our objectives. Then once we have resolved all matters that deal with other mysterious phrases like "crop factor" and "equivalent to 35 mm". No wonder it is difficult to decide on a target?
While it is easy to understand that a greater length of the lens increases and offers more short length lens provides a wider view, it helps to understand what a Standard Lens is long before you start making comparisons.
There is a way to use mathematics to determine what constitutes a standard length for any camera lens and I'll add a touch of math Fun at the end of this discussion. This kind of mental gymnastics is something interesting for us geeks, but the other picture of 98% of the world I do not want the channel.
That said we'll make an assumption: The digital camera with an APS-average image of companies have a goal standard length (sometimes called normal) 28 mm.
Well, big deal, what does? That this bit of information tells us is that if you mount a lens in a Digital Slr and put it in a length of 28 mm seen by the camera shows the world in the same perspective that we could see a eye. In other words, there is a "normal" or objective "standard" length. We have the length reference that can be used to compare lenses.
Let's do some mental cleaning, first place. I encourage you to ignore some terms. We can not forget "crop factor" and "35mm equivalent" for the moment. Like most new DSLR buyers did not have a camera with interchangeable lenses, these terms simply add unnecessary layers of issues and confuses the issue.
Another After putting aside for the moment is the "X Factor". compact camera lens is described with phrases like "5X zoom, which is frankly a kind of sense. "Expressing the length of the lens in this way is useful, but ineffective, and here's why. A goal of 20-100mm is a goal of 5 times, but it is also a 50-250mm lens. "X Factor" ad-speak and only superficially useful in the world of compact cameras.
We still So with an angle and telephoto lens and wide field of vision. These three relationships that can sink our teeth and do it: As just mentioned, a DSLR with a 28mm lens has a field of view similar to that of an eye. The length of the lens will be less than 28 mm wider field of view (large angle), a lens from a narrow field of view (telephoto).
There is a certain ease, it do math in-your-head Now we can use to compare lenses. If 28mm is normal 14mm lens then take a wider view twice. A lens of 50 mm provided view almost twice as much. Is this really what the equivalent on a 35mm film camera or factor is culture? Nope.
Thus, in the real world we can now make well-informed judgments when comparing lenses of digital cameras. If we are given a goal that is 18-55mm, we now know that we have a wide-angle and telephoto length of light that make the world look twice. Another kit offers a 28-80mm lens and understand that we get a lens with zero capacity wide-angle to telephoto about three times more than our eyes.
We've added some new knowledge and confidence to make a decision between the lenses of digital cameras has increased.
In conclusion, I would like to give some advice. With all manufacturers in the world Hawking's flight telephoto is easy to forget the sharp part of the equation. If you ever take pictures in your living room you will be better served if the lens of the camera offers a wide-angle coverage of 28 mm below.
The difference between 28mm and 17mm, we know From this work gives a broader view with the shorter lens, but how much? In 28 mm which captures three people scrunched together on the couch. In 17mm we Now get a sofa set and tables as well.
Geeks Corner Photo: The math behind eyeglasses
As have done above, there are assumptions, I offer as a means to reduce to the essentials:
1) We speak collectively DSLR image sensor APS-enterprises.
2) There is a difference between leading manufacturer of image sensors to the actual size their sensors. However, the real impact of these differences in size is minimal.
3) The terms "normal" and "Standard" refers to an objective perspective that does not necessarily mean its angle of vision.
The rule of the shorter and easier demonstrated over time is that the format normal lens room is the diagonal length of the camera image of the film or sensor. This aim to capture the world show the subject in perspective other than the scene is seen through our eyes.
A calculation of the average APS-C 22.7X15.1mm gives a diagonal of 27.26mm. Nikon uses a sensor that is slightly larger and the performance of a diagonal of 28.4mm. There have been other changes in APS sized digital sensors, but all are on a diagonal of 28 mm. So I chose to say that 28 mm in length is considered "normal" in all size digital cameras APS.
The calculation is as follows: + 22.7mm2 15.1mm2 = 743.3mm. Then we find the square root of 743.3mm, 743.3mm √ = 27.26mm
