Vivitar is a leading manufacturer and very respectable in the secondary market in the years 1970 and 1980. In general, their products were top of the line compared to other aftermarket suppliers. Pre-AI means it was probably built in later than mid-1970. It's so old. Something to keep in mind is that the technology of Optical Zoom is fairly new in the 1970s, and optical quality is not up to modern standards. In particular, the first generation of zooms did not show their sharpness. for the filing of the lens is almost certain metal – aluminum or brass – and not plastic. Combine that with the opening of f3.5, and the conclusion is that this objective is quite heavy compared to modern lenses. As others have noted, pre-AI lenses, in general, not ride on modern Digital Cameras. AI means "self-indexing" – a technology that makes possible that the diaphragm of the lens must be provided to the automation in the room. It is theoretically possible to have pre-AI lenses "AI'ed" – meaning they were modified to provide AI functionality. This is a common service offering to repair the camera at the end of 1970 and 1980. It can be difficult to find a store that is willing to consider today, and costs could be considerable. Frankly, I recommend buying a more modern purpose expenditures in this model. You can probably find a modern lens that can easily be mounted on the D70 and less expensive than cost of this objective and modification of bird flu.
